ANNIE LOU SMITH, tenth child of Virgil and Rachel Smith, was born August 2, 1895 in Mansfield, DeSoto Parish, Louisiana.  Like her older sisters, she began school in rural Louisiana and later in Center, Texas.  She attended North Texas State Normal College, Denton, Texas to be a teacher.  In 1917 she was on a train to Denton when an rail accident occurred.  A young man in a soldier's uniform had sat down beside her in Texarkana.  She was trying hard to be prim and ladylike as her mother had instructed her, so she didn't talk with him until a wreck caused a delay for several hours.  Finally, they began a conversation that lasted for the remainder of their lives.  On June 30, 1918 she married IRA R. TITUS, after they carried on their courtship by mail for several months.  Ira was a Lieutenant stationed at Camp Bowie, Fort Worth, Texas.  He was a graduate of the University of Arkansas as a civil engineer and worked for the Texas Highway Department after World War I.  They later moved to Kermit, Texas and later to Pecos, Texas where they spent the remainder of their years.  Ira Ralph died on March 7, 1961 at the age of seventy-one.  Lou died on March 7, 1987, at the age of ninety-one.  Both are buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Pecos, Texas.
