EDWARD COVINGTON SMITH, third child of Virgil and Rachel Smith, was born January 2, 1883 in Mansfield, DeSota Parish, Louisiana.  The family moved to Center, Texas in 1900.  He married VIRGINIA SINGLETARY on Mary 16, 1909 in Center, Texas.  She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. JOSIAH E. SINGLETARY.  She was born in Martinsville, Texas on December 19, 1879. Virginia was a respected teacher for ten years in Shelby County Schools including East Hamilton, Elm Grove, Good Hope and Arcadia.   Edward was active in the insurance business, real estate by leasing land for the major oil companies.  Virginia died on August 2, 1952.  Edward died on November 5, 1940.  Both are buried in Fairview Cemetery, Center, Shelby County, Texas.

The children of Edward and Virginia Smith:

    1. ELOISE ELIZABETH SMITH, first child of Edward and Virginia Smith, was born April 4, 1910 in Shelby County, Texas.  Eloise received her Bachelor of Science degree from Texas Woman's University at Denton, Texas and a Master of Arts from Stephen F. Austin University, Nacogdoches, Texas.  She taught school on the Gulf Coast for eleven years and worked at Consolidated Steel Company in Orange, Texas during World War II.  She taught first grade in Center Public School and there she retired.   Eloise had two foster children; LINDA and KATHY.

    2. MILDRED ELAINE SMITH, second child of Edward and Virginia Smith, was born September 4, 1912 in Shelby County, Texas.  Elaine also received her Bachelor of Science degree from Texas Woman's University at Denton, Texas.  She chose to major in Library Science and taught school in Kermit, Winkler County, Texas.  in 1935 she became certified librarian at Livingston High School.  In 1938 she became Head Librarian of Reagan Senior High School.  Before retirement she was the Learning Resource Specialist at Stephen F. Austin Senior High School. in Houston, Texas.  She married HOWARD E. BERRY in 1942.  To this union MARILYN ANN BERRY and DAVID EDWARD BERRY were born.

    3. VIRGINIA EDDIE SMITH, third child of Edward and Virginia Smith, was born on October 31, 1915 in Shelby County, Texas.  Virginia earned her Bachelor of Science Degree from Texas Woman's University at Denton, Texas.  She taught school in Port Arthur, Texas.  Virginia married GEORGE H. KEATING.  He was a chemist for a major oil company.  They resided in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Venezuela and Santiago, Cuba.  They retired in Amarillo, Texas.  To this union JOHN EDWARD KEATING was born.
