THANKS, DON TRUITT The spelling of the Truitt name has varied in so many ways, even when on the same deed or will, and it is believed that all TRUITT'S, TREWITT'S, TRUETT'S, TREWHIT'S, TRUIT'S are probably from the same original lines.  In some cases spelling of the name can be found PRUITT, PRUETT and even Trout and Trit.  It is believed that originally Truitt's were inhabitants of France and that some of them were soldiers in the army of William The Conqueror when he came to England in 1066. Mention is also made that some came to England because of their religion, being members of the French Huguenots, and that they left France when they were victims of persecution.  It is thought that they migrated into Scotland and other parts of Great Brittain.

On these web pages the name TRUITT will be used in all cases except when quotation is made form original documents.  The use of TRUITT is for ease and certainly not to offend any person who may wish for other spelling of the name.

Tradition from one source says that LEVY was "asporter or gamester" who came to Swanneoa, North Carolina from England.  Another spelling of his name could have been LEVI, or LEVEY.  He married SUSANNA MORGAN, who came to Maryland from Scotland, then to Buncombe, North Carolina, probably about 1794.     She was born in 1780.   A Levi Truitt is memtioned when Burke County, North Carolina was formed from Buncombe County in 1809.  There is a Truitt Cemetery at Brush Creek, Macon County, North Carolina.  One record says that Levi Truitt sold to Jeremiah Truitt on July 1, 1823, 50 acres on North front of Swannanoa.  LEVI TRUITT died on December 15, 1830 in Macon County,  North Carolina.
